Piaggio – This Italian brand also includes a number of other moped makers such as: Aprilia, Derbi, Gilera, Puch and Vespa. Piaggio has been a noted innovator in the moped manufacturing industry.

Vespa – Although owned by Piaggio, Vespa is one of the most popular and longest producting manufacturers of mopeds. It was the Vespa moped that transported soldiers in the field in World War Two. After the war, Vespa came to the rest of Europe and North America and became popular among many famous Hollywood movie stars. The Vespa was the “go to” moped during the energy crisis in the 1970s. They are also highly touted as dependable and stylish. They also rank high on the list of buying used mopeds.

Honda – Though commonly associated with motorcycles and automobiles, Honda has a great reputation for quality in their products. Honda is the largest manufacturer of mopeds in the world. A used Honda moped is certainly a great find.

Yamaha – The Yamaha brand has been around producing mopeds since 1955. They are easily one of the longest running makers. The stylish makes and models are often found in moped racing.

Kymco – This Taiwanese manufacturer is a major supplier to much of Asia. They are a very popular brand and well known throughout South East Asia. They produce more than 480,000 vehicles a year.

Genuine Scooter – This is an American based company whose headquarters is in Chicago, Illinois. This business started out by selling Vespa and Lambretta models, but soon branched into making their own brand of wheels, including the Roughhouse model and the Rattler model, both specified for recreational and off road use.

Suzuki – Also better known as a street bike maker, Suzuki also makes mopeds that are well above industry standards. The model FA50 is touted as a reliable 50cc moped that does away with the pedals and it has a kick start.

SYM Sanyang Industry – Another Taiwanese moped maker, SYM produces over 600,000 models of scooters and mopeds a year and employs over 2,000 people. Their models are known for their speed and fuel efficiency. They have multiple manufacturing plants all over South East Asia.

Lambretta – Although now defunct, this Italian moped maker was very popular. They rose in popularity around the Second World War similar to the Vespa.
