Tips for Moped Beginners

If you’ve never ridden a moped before but want to start, it’s a good idea to ease into the process instead of jumping head first into it. A moped moves faster than a bicycle and offers less protection than a motorcycle.

First make sure you have protection equipment. A helmet is necessary for protection from an accident. It is not recommended to wear shorts when riding, in case of a spill, you will be less likely to acquire abrasions from the concrete. Gloves can help you keep safe. A natural reaction to a fall is to put one’s hands down to stop, but if you have no gloves, your hands are likely to get abrasions as well. A riding jacket is important for protection as well as it will protect your torso, leather or denim is a common material. No tip can be more important than one that will keep you safe.

Get familiar with your moped. Meaning, if you are mechanically inclined make sure to take a look at the internal workings of the moped and get a feel for how it runs. If you are not mechanically inclined, find a friend or relative who is who can guide you through what you need to know. You’ll want to learn the basics about the engine and the power source and of course the tires should you ever need to change them.

Always make sure your moped is in good working order before you take it out. Test the brakes, make sure the chains are lubricated and check your headlights (some states require headlights to be on even during the day).

One of the most important tips is to be aware of your surroundings. Stay off your cell phone. Be on the lookout at every intersection. Stay aware of the cars beside you and behind you. Keep aware of traffic trying to turn onto your road from the side. Stay aware of the cars in the middle of the road looking to turn in front of you. Always stay mindful of pedestrians or bicyclists, especially in a busy urban area. You never know when a pedestrian will just jump out into the middle of traffic. While you are smaller than a car and would likely receive most of the damage in a collision, an accident with a pedestrian could injure you both.

Make sure to plan your trip in advance. While it is true mopeds get good gas mileage, the last thing you want to do is run out of gas on your way to grandma’s house and have to push your moped halfway there.
