Scooters and Mopeds

Scooters and mopeds have several similarities, but there are also differences. Most people are not aware of the differences and use the two words interchangeably, which leads to people thinking they want a scooter when they want a moped, or they buy a moped when they were really hoping for a motor scooter. Even some of the manufacturers of these items are starting to blur together, which adds to the confusion. The two things are even starting to look like each other, with similar designs and styles being applied to what has been traditionally been known as moped. But theres actually a pretty concrete difference, and its a relatively easy one to remember.

Mopeds are motorized vehicles that often, but not always, look like descendents of bicycles. The first mopeds were simple bicycles with small engines attached. While the look may have changed over the years, the engines need to remain more or less the same. In that sense, they need to be 50cc or smaller. They need to have a top speed of thirty miles per hour. They are not street legal in most jurisdictions, and they do not need to be registered in most areas either, because they are not street legal. If you are in the market for a scooter or moped, make sure you understand the difference and make sure that you know which one you want before you make your purchase. Once you do decide which one youd like to own that would best suit your needs, be sure to verify your local laws.
