Mopeds With Pedals
Even though it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a new moped model that actually has pedals, the original prototypes and the first ones in productions were mopeds with pedals. In fact, the mopeds relied on pedals as well as engines! The name itself seems to be derived from the use of both a motorthe mo partand pedalsthe ped part. Thus, we have mo plus ped, or a moped. I guess it makes a certain sort of sense that over the years, with more and more technological advances, that the pedals were sort of lost, and the defining characteristic of the moped has been focused on the motor, or the engine, itself. Basically, out of tradition, a moped engine shouldnt be larger than 50cc, and 150cc is getting very closer to just motor scooter territory. Especially since motor scooters and mopeds are beginning to look very similar as the lines and the distinctions between them begin to blend and become eradicated.
It is, however, still possible to find models with pedals. First, the used mopeds from decades past will still have pedals. Second, it is possible to find mopeds created in the same sort of style as the first one, which amounts to bicycles with motors attached to them. These are also called motorized bikes, and some places and people distinguish them from mopeds the way mopeds are distinguished from motor scooters. If you like the retro or nostalgic look, or you prefer to use a motor to aid the movement instead of letting it do all the work, you can still find models with pedals.
For a long time, pedals were an important characteristic of mopeds.
