![]() Chapter 10: Moped AccessoriesThe most important accessory to remember when buying a moped is a helmet. Any first-time buyer of a moped should consider the helmet a mandatory part of the moped purchase and one should not ride off the dealerships lot without one. Because mopeds and helmets both come in so many shapes, sizes and colors, it can be fun choosing a helmet that matches or compliments your new moped; your own personal style can be displayed every time you ride. Other accessories that many moped, scooter and motorcycle riders favor are clothing pieces that increase safety. Aside from head injuries, which are dramatically reduced by the use of helmets, among the more common road injuries for moped riders are skin abrasions, or road rash. Thick, leather or denim jackets, pants and gloves are all items of clothing that can dramatically minimize the road damage to ones skin in the event of an accident. Another popular accessory for mopeds is a weather-proof cover. Unlike the cover for a car, a moped cover is relatively very small and lightweight and can be draped over a moped in just seconds. Even over the course of a daily commute, covering a moped when not using it can protect it from the elements, from paint damage by passing people and vehicles, and even from theft: many studies have shown that simply hiding an item from view makes it much less likely to be stolen. In addition, there are several true anti-theft devices available for motor scooters and mopeds, including wheel locks, battery and trunk compartment locks, and alarms. Most mopeds come with some form of trunk beneath the seat. This is frequently designed to be large enough to store the riders helmet. While the seat trunk might also offer enough room to store a wallet, a small handbag, a bottle of water and/or a few other small items, they are certainly not large enough to store anything of considerable size. For those who might need more transport space, moped saddle bags are available that offer more room while permitting the user to distribute weights equally across both sides of the moped. This is very important in retaining proper balance when riding. Saddle bags can enable one to carry a laptop computer on his or her daily commute, as well as a few other items of similar size and weight. Another important accessory that should be carried whenever possible is a basic tool kit. These can be purchased specifically for mopeds in mind; they will be small and compact and contain the necessities for emergency scooter maintenance including a tire gauge, spare motor oil, a tire patching kit, and perhaps a multi-tool that incorporates different sizes of wrenches. Last, there are accessories available for attachment to mopeds and motorcycles that are purely for convenience of the rider. One may find an attachment kit for a mobile phone or GPS device that affixes to the handlebar or a holder that can affix a water bottle to the body of the scooter. While these items are clearly small enough to fit in a trunk, their attachment elsewhere enables the rider to access them if necessary while in motion, and also frees up space within the trunk compartment for other items. |
