Chapter 7: Moped Care and Maintenance

Like all motor vehicles, mopeds will require a certain amount of maintenance in order to continue to function properly. It is also important to maintain your moped properly and according to specified guidelines in order to ensure continuation of your warranty; most warranties are nullified in the event of neglect of the vehicle.

The required maintenance of a moped depends dramatically upon whether it is a gas or electric model. Maintenance of gasoline models can be comparable to the maintenance required for a car or a gas-powered lawn more. One important factor is actually the gasoline itself. Like gas-powered lawn mowers, a gas-powered moped is quite sensitive to old gasoline. You might find after a period of inactivity that the moped does not want to start or function properly. Thus, it is important to anticipate a period of inactivity and plan accordingly, so that the gas in your moped is never too old. Some recommend using the gasoline up and then adding fresh gas upon re-use. There are also gasoline additives that can stabilize gasoline, but addition of these to old gasoline is not always completely effective.

Like a car, your moped will also require regular oil changes. Also like a car, it is a good idea to schedule these according to miles driven or time, whichever is shorter. Your moped owners manual will offer suggestions for the type of oil to be used and how frequently it needs to be changed. As with gasoline, it is also a good idea not to leave old oil sitting in the moped for a long period of inactivity.

While gasoline and oil changes are two factors that can usually be accomplished by the user, the less mechanically inclined may wish to schedule regular maintenance with a professional moped or scooter mechanic for other important components of its operating system. Just like a car, your moped requires regular attention to its brake system, transmission system and fluids, air filter, spark plug, suspension, lighting system, and tires. Proper maintenance of a mopeds tires is perhaps even more important than that on a car. Because there are only two, it can be especially difficult for a rider to retain control of a moped in the event of a tire blowout.

Electric mopeds require different maintenance than gasoline-powered models. Clearly, they do not require gasoline. This is not only a savings in maintenance but also in expense for operation. Additionally, electrically powered mopeds do not require oil or filter changes or spark plugs.

Items that do require attention on an electric scooter include the tires, the battery and the fuses. Tires on an electrical scooter will require the same maintenance and occasional replacement as those on a gas-powered motor. Because the battery is a rechargeable one, it will eventually lose charge capacity just like the battery on a computer or other rechargeable device. Like computer batteries, a moped battery that is allowed to drain completely and then charge completely will generally last longer than one that is put through more charge cycles. Again, your moped owners manual will specify the optimal ways to charge and utilize your mopeds battery.
